Biochar (or Agrichar) - Local, Renewable, Carbon-Negative Energy?
with Johannes Lehman, Assoc. Professor of Soil Biogeochemistry at Cornell University
"Research in the Amazon rainforest has unearthed a soil management practice that may have high relevance for sustainable land care. This presentation will discuss opportunities to use biochar (organic material heated under low-air conditions, similar to charcoal) as a soil amendment, motivated by remnants of ancient soil use in the Amazon. This biochar can not only be used for improving soils for the long term but also be integrated in bioenergy concepts that may yield carbon-negative energy. This win-win situation provides options for clean air, clean water and healthy soils."

"Building Strong Ropes to Nature" - An Active Presentation led by Tim Drake & Jed Jordan of Primitive Pursuits, with Dr. Jason Hamilton of the Biology & Sustainability Dept. at Ithaca College
Rapid changes taking place in the natural world drive us to seek the
skills we need to continue adapting and living in the balance. More
than just acknowledging our connection to nature, there is a strong
desire to exercise that connection tangibly. In "building strong ropes
to nature" we see that sustainability is not simply another word for
environmental education and we'll take a hands on approach to moving
forward while looking back. Join us for the evening and take home a
deeper understanding of the natural world, inspirational stories and a
"rope to nature" of your own making!
